The European consortium ICARUS, led by Deimos, has received 10 million euros from the EU to develop an inflatable heat shield (IHS) to recover rocket stages, satellites, and prepare missions to Mars. The shield will reduce mechanical and aerothermal loads during re-entry, facilitating the recovery and reuse of space systems, making them more sustainable with less environmental impact. Partners include Atmos, DLR, CIRA, and ONERA. The project will be demonstrated in 2028.
