This mission will last seven and a half years during which it will thoroughly study the planet.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8966a8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8966a8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe BepiColombo probe, named after Italian scientist Giuseppe Bepi Colombo (1920-1984) is now, after over three years of travel, over 100 million kilometers away from Earth, poised to overfly Mercury at an altitude of 198 kilometers. It will do this six more times until it enters its orbit in 2025. Once it does, it will deploy a total of two scientific orbiters in complementary orbits.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-87cca4d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"87cca4d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe first orbiter is the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) run by the ESA European agency. The second one is the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter of the JAXA Japanese agency.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-700e0ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"700e0ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBoth will study the features and particularities of Mercury, such as its magnetic field, its geology, the volatiles it contains and whether there is water present or not.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-371b49a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"371b49a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOne of the most important instruments of the MPO orbiter is a laser altimeter called \u2018BELA\u2019, which will allow for a more detailed mapping of Mercury\u2019s surface. The Andaluc\u00eda Institute of Astrophysics (IAA-CSIC) has been involved in its development.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49a65bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49a65bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis mission and its instruments enable the study of a mysterious planet that is difficult to explore from Earth due to its position in relation to our planet and its proximity to the Sun.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2461cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2461cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The images were acquired by the probe\u2019s monitoring cameras during a gravity assist flyby of Mercury and, while they may not be the most significant, they can already be used to identify some large craters. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ee0b23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ee0b23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMercury is like no other planet, since its surface is dark almost all over and it was formed by vast lava flows billions of years ago.
