In Spain we have first-rate\ntalent, world-class academic and\nresearch institutions, and a solid\nindustry with a great ability to\ncompete at an international level\u201d<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSpace Transportation is undergoing a\nmetamorphosis process. The demand for launch services is growing exponentially across the globe and, still, Europe is far from being capable of satisfying it. For the first time\nin over 40 years we are facing a possible scenario where Europe has zero capacity to access space. These are not good news for anyone. This uncertain future requires stern\ndecisions and demands change in the system that has dominated this side of the pond from its very inception.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDuring last November\u2019s Space Summit, the first few\nagreements were signed that put on paper that \u2018intent\u2019 to\nstart traversing the path towards a model where the United\nStates is more than a decade ahead of us. In addition to\nsigning \u2018major agreements\u2019 to ensure the immediate\nEuropean ability of accessing space, we are at a turning\npoint in regard to the role of international agency funding\nand the growing capabilities of national agencies, with\nwide-ranging programs. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt has been made clear that the use of resources when it\ncomes to launch vehicles has not been based on criteria\nfocused on competitiveness. This structure, which worked\nin the past, collides with the dynamism of a vast majority of\nnew companies of the sector which, despite having been\nforced to seek funding outside the traditional structure,\nhave been able to react to the unforeseen circumstances\nthat are inherent to an ever-changing industry and move\nat a speed that they would never have been able to attain\nfrom within the system itself. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe truth is that this problem offers us the perfect excuse\nand Seville was the setting that was chosen to overhaul\nthe modulus operandi of traditional European space\ntransportation. The European Space Agency (ESA) publicly\ndemonstrated its trust in small launch vehicle companies\nas essential players in the streamlining of a model that is\nnot serving the needs of the clients. Taking into account\nnew sector stakeholders as a way to complement ESA\u2019s\noffering with a different type of launch vehicle is something\nthat we must value. And in this new context, Spain will find\nan opportunity.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPLD Space will be competing in the European challenge\nwith a launch vehicle entirely designed, developed and\nmanufactured in our country. The successful test flight of\nour demonstrator, MIURA 1, makes it clear that we have\nthe ability to do it and, more remarkably, that we can do so\nwhile staying within the costs demanded by the market. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBut if we want Spain to play a leading role rather than\nbeing merely a spectator in this paradigm, implementing\nthe current national strategy for space is paramount. There\nis no doubt that space will transform the way in which the\nvalue chains of all industries operate, with an impact on\npar with the advent of internet in the 90s. The creation\nand implementation of the Spanish\nSpace Agency implies a significant\nmilestone, but now we need a\nroadmap as a country that enables\nSpain to take part of this exclusive\nworld order. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe already have the\nmost important element: a first\ntechnology that has proven its ability\nto provide that much-sought access\nto space; we have the capability of\nsitting down at the table of the great\nworld powers and sell our system.\nWe cannot let this opportunity slip\npast us. The time to start over is now. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn Spain we are lucky enough to\ncount with other highly competitive\npillars that can support this space\nstrategy and, together, lead it to\nsuccess. We have first rate talent,\nworld-class academic and research\ninstitutions, and a solid industry\nwith a great ability to compete at\nan international level. Once this\nentire ecosystem works hand-inhand\nand counts with the support\nof institutions and administrations, it\nwill be able to achieve success in a\nsector as complex as space. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis transmutation process is\nintrinsic to PLD Space. During our 12\nyears of existence we have learned\nto adapt, pivot, try and fail, and keep\ntrying. The launch of MIURA 1 has\nhelped us obtain highly valuable\nfeedback to be applied to the model\nof our new orbital rocket MIURA\n5. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNow, our challenge consists of\nbuilding and establishing a supply\nchain that enables us to advance in\nthe creation of a space launch vehicle\nproduction industry. An endeavor\nthat relies on vertical integration and\nwill lead us to develop certain parts\ndown to a component level, which\nwe would outsource in the past. Only\nthis way will we be able to guarantee\nan autonomous launch capability\nthat is not reliant on third parties.
