From april 16 to 29nine female Spanish scientists participated in Hypatia I, the first all-female, Spanish, intergenerational, multidisciplinary mission at the Mars Research Desert Station, located in the deserts of Utah, United States.
During this period they lived in isolation,
feeding on dehydrated foods and
with limited access to drinking water.
Additionally, they wore astronaut gear
with limited mobility when going outside.
The purpose of this program is to raise
awareness about women in space and
foster an interest for science among
girls and teenagers. This first edition has
counted with a budget of 50,000 euros
provided by the Generalitat Catalana,
Fundació Barcelona-La Pedrera and
Fundación Banc Sabadell.
The crew is composed of Mariona
Badenas-Agustí, Carla Conejo González,
Ariadna Farrés Basiana, Laia Ribas, Núria
Jar, Neus Sabaté, Cesca Cufí-Prat, Anna
Bach and Helena Arias (with the last two
being back-up members).
